Red Wine Basil Marinara

It's super-easy to make this classic Italian sauce that's great on all kinds of pasta.

Ingredients: 

  • 1/2 - 2 cups crushed canned tomatoes

  • 1 small can tomato paste

  • 1 cup red wine

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil

  • 1 onion, finely diced (optional)

  • 1 clove garlic, finely diced or crushed through a garlic press

  • 1 tsp dried basil or 1 Tbsp fresh basil finely chopped

  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano

  • 1/2 tsp salt

 

Instructions:

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil. Cook the onion (if using) for a few minutes. Add the garlic. Cook for an additional minute. Add red wine. Cook down slightly and add the spices and salt. Add the canned tomatoes and tomato paste. Stir until well mixed. Turn heat down to low. Simmer, uncovered, until the desired consistency is reached. (Just a few minutes for a thinner sauce, or longer for a thicker sauce.) Serve over pasta. 

Makes 4 to 6 servings.
